The main reason I started my blog is because I want to share aspirational and positive content. I read a book earlier this year – The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho – and it genuinely did change my life. I’ve never felt this way about a book before and it surprised me in so many ways. It also inspired me and changed my outlook on life, so inevitably I have to share what I love about this book with you, along with some of my favourite quotes.
Living in the past and worrying about the future
I don’t live in either my past or my future. I’m interested only in the present. If you can concentrate always on the present, you’ll be a happy man.
I read The Alchemist shortly after I came to terms with my anxiety. You can read more about this on my recent blog post. I was at a time in my life where I needed something uplifting and enlightening, and this book taught me a few things that are still precious to me today.
I’m one of those people that lives in the past and constantly worries about the future. It got to the point where I would worry so much that I couldn’t enjoy the present. The Alchemist helped me to realise that I need to focus on taking each day as it comes. I often worry about things that aren’t actually worth worrying about and by doing this, I make myself really unhappy. It’s important to remember the past and have dreams for the future, but I need to make sure I enjoy the moment, the present day. And it works.
The little things in life
You’ll notice that the tag line for my blog is ‘It’s the little things in life’. This was actually inspired by my next Alchemist quote. My anxiety led me to focus on the bad things that were happening in my life only. I would compare myself to others and think, “Why am I not this happy and having lots of amazing moments to enjoy?”.
When each day is the same as the next, it’s because people fail to recognize the good things that happen in their lives every day that the sun rises.
I’m sure there are lots of you that have days that can be quite monotonous. My working days in particular tend to follow the same pattern unless I have occasional plans with family and friends. I failed to see the good things that happened every day. I failed to appreciate them. After hitting that low point in my life, it made me realise how lucky I am. It made me realise that even the smallest of good things can have the biggest effect.
The meaning of love
My fiancé comes from a very scientific background and we’ve had conversations before where we’ve tried to explain what love is to each other. My version was a soppy, romantic speech. His? It was somewhere along the lines of it being a chemical reaction (he meant well). One of my favourite quotes from The Alchemist summed up exactly what love is. It is even has a scientific reference! 🙂
It was the pure Language of the World. It required no explanation, just as the universe needs none as it travels through endless time.
When life throws the unexpected at you
Everything you need to know you have learned through your journey.
Sometimes things happen in life that we don’t understand. We don’t always know why these things happen or how this plays a part in our future. These things can be a mix of positive and negative experiences. I strongly believe that everything happens for a reason. Something negative might seem like the worst thing in the world at the time, but in the long term it may change your life for the better. This doesn’t apply to everything of course, but sometimes bad things have to happen for better things to come together.
Look for the good omens
Learn to recognize omens, and follow them.
This is another one of my favourite quotes from The Alchemist. There are good and bad omens in life and it’s important to recognise those.
For me, a good omen would be something like a person who believes in me and inspires me. It could be a book that changes my life. It could also be receiving an act of kindness that motivates me to carry out my own.
Take a chance
The final quote is something that I have been working on more this year.
Give yourself freedom to try out new things. Don’t be so set in your ways that you can’t grow.
There are a few new things I want to try in the next year. I’ve already accomplished one of those – creating my own blog. Life is too short not to make the most of new exciting opportunities. If you never try, you’ll never know.
I wasn’t initially sure how I felt about this book when I first started reading it. If I’m honest, I found it a little strange. The more I indulged in the story however, the more I began to see why it has such a positive impact on those who read it. The Alchemist is the perfect feel good read and if you’re looking for something uplifting and inspiring, I would certainly recommend reading this. It’s great for life lessons and helping us remember that we all have our fair share of good and bad days on the journey to our destiny. 😊
